No urgent hearing for the extension of NRC deadline: Supreme Court

July 16: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused urgent hearing on the issues related to extending the 31 July deadline for publication of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The petition for urgent hearing on the NRC issue of Assam was filed by the Central and Assam government before the apex court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had made the petition in front of the SC and had submitted that it will not be possible to complete the NRC by 31 July. The apex court bench comprised of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi along with Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose denied providing the grant and rather said, “We will see. We will examine the petition.”
