Amendment brought to Cattle Preservation Act 2021 to “Seize and Auction” vehicles carrying illegal cow
Dec. 24: In its mission to strengthen protection of cattle in the state, Assam government has brought an amendment to the Cattle Preservation Act 2021. Speaking on this, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa stated that the new additions will ease transportation of cattle for agricultural purposes and ensure stringent punishment for cattle smugglers.

Objective of Amendment Bill
Strengthen the Act and maintain harmonious balance between the Act’s objectives with importance of cattle wealth agrarian life
Inter-district transport:
Remove some restrictions to facilitate inter-district transportation of cattle barring districts sharing international border.
Exemption:
Delete the provision of exemption to certain places of worship or occasions for cattle slaughter as “Buffalo” does not come under the Act’s purview
Farm Registration:
Register agency or farm intending to transport cattle for bonafide agricultural or animal husbandry purposes
Public auction:
Court to order for public auction of seized vehicle/conveyance including boat, vessel etc., except cattle
Property seizure:
Attachment or seizure of documents of movable & immovable property of accused under the principal Act.
