VC of JNU, M Jagadesh Kumar appointed as Chairman of UGC
Feb. 4: Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University was appointed on Friday to the post of Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC).
The notification issued by the Ministry of Education on 4 February stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Sub-Section (1) of Section 5 read with Sub-Section (1) of Section 6 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956), the Central Government hereby appoints Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University to the post of Chairman, University Grants Commission in Level 17 of the Pay Matrix, for a period of five years from the date of his assumption of charge of the post, or until he attains the age of 65 years, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.”
Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar is an academician, administrator and author who has been the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University since January 2021. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi. M Jagadesh Kumar took over as VC of JNU from Sudhir Kumar Sopory in January 2016.
