Unrest in Assam-Mizoram border impacting Barak Valley, Sushmita writes to CM Sonowal
Oct. 19: The simmering tension along Assam-Mizoram inter-state border at Lailapur following a flare up on Saturday took an ugly turn when some houses and stalls were torched by miscreants from other side of the border. This has has impacted the peace and safety of Barak Valley. People have been injured and there is huge damage to property. This was highlighted in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal by former MP of Silchar & President of All India Mahila Congress on Monday.
Stating about the incident, Ms. Dev wrote, “This is impacting two districts of Cachar and Karimganj in particular. I believe that there has been a total failure of intelligence on the part of Assam government. Whereas, thousands mobilised on the Mizoram side with huge presence of Mizoram police, Assam Police actually had no information. As per the people’s version on the Assam side, this was a concerted attack on them. I have visited the spot and people are very fearful.”
This is Mizoram police at the Assam border and see their mobilisation. Pls gauge the situation at the border. So much for North East Democratic Alliance. What kind of an alliance is it where 2 alliance partners are Warring over land at the cost of innocent people ?@CMOfficeAssam pic.twitter.com/3CkWgx0EQH

Sushmita Dev further raised the issue of compensating those who have suffered injuries and lost their properties. She wrote, “It is pertinent to point out that Mizoram is ruled by a NEDA partner and yet there seems to be acrimony brewing with Assam which is also ruled by a NEDA ally. The alliance seems to be a complete mockery, if two Chief Ministers under NEDA are unable to prevent such incidents from happening.”
She concluded with an appeal to the Chief Minister to visit the spot. “I request your personal visit as the Home Minster of Assam to assess the situation at the border and humbly request that you ensure that these incidents don’t repeat,” stated Ms. Dev.
