১৪ মার্চঃ ছাত্র-গবেষকদের চাপে শেষপর্যন্ত ব্রিটিশ কায়দায় গাউন পরেই দীক্ষাগ্রহণ হল আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সপ্তদশ সমাবর্তনে। এমনকী, যে উত্তরীয় কিনে আনা হয়ে গিয়েছিল, গাউনের উপরেই তা পরিয়ে দেওয়ার কথা হয়েছিল। এ নিয়ে আবার কোন বিতর্ক হয়, তা ভেবে এই সিদ্ধান্ত থেকেও সরে দাঁড়ায় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ।

সমাবর্তন শেষে উপাচার্য দিলীপচন্দ্র নাথ বলেন, কী আর করা যাবে! তবে উত্তরীয় কেনায় ক্ষতি হয়নি। সারা বছর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নানা অনুষ্ঠানে প্রচুর উত্তরীয় লাগে। তখন সেগুলি কাজে লাগবে। তাঁর কথায়, সমাবর্তনের জন্য পোশাক বিধি তৈরি করছে ইউজিসি। এ ব্যাপারে কাজ অনেকটা এগিয়ে গিয়েছে। শীঘ্র তা ঘোষণা করা হবে।

র দীক্ষান্ত ভাষণ দেন তামিলনাড়ু কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য, প্রখ্যাত বিজ্ঞানী এপি দাশ। তিনি ভারতের উচ্চশিক্ষা চিত্র তুলে ধরে বলেন, স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তী ৭০ বছরে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বেড়েছে, ছাত্রছাত্রী বেড়েছে। কিন্তু গবেষণা, দক্ষতা বিকাশ, নারীদের বিজ্ঞান-প্রযুক্তি শিক্ষার জায়গা এখনও মজবুত হয়নি।

March 14: Ultimately under the pressure of the students and research scholars, the degree holders of Assam University attended the 17th Convocation at Assam University wearing gowns designed as per British tradition. The University authorities even purchased ‘uttoriya’ to be put over the gowns. However, at the last moment, Assam University gave up this idea thinking that it might invite a new controversy.

After the end of the Convocation ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath said, what can be done! He, however, said that though the University purchased huge quantity of ‘uttoriyo’, but that would not be a waste. Many programmes are regularly held in the varsity, wherein ‘uttoriyo’ is required. So these could be used then. He said, UGC has devised new type of dress for convocations giving away to British gowns, which would be notified soon.

The Convocation address was delivered on Thursday by the Chief Guest A.P. Dash, an eminent scientist and Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Cantral University. Speaking during the occasion, A.P. Dash said that in the post-independence era, the number of universities in the country has increased and also there has been an increase in the number of students. However, research activities, skill enhancement, special space for women in scientific research are yet to be achieved.

A total of 5,935 scholars and students were conferred degrees and diplomas during the 17^th Convocation Day. 207 students were conferred Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 99 – Master of Philosophy, 534 Masters of Arts, 239 – Master of Science and 80 – Master of Commerce.
