Triangular contest at Silchar, Nazia Yasmin to contest as NPP candidate

March 21: Last week Congress had declared Sushmita Dev as the party’s candidate for the prestigious Silchar Lok Sabha seat. On Thursday evening, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too declared a list of 184 candidates. Dr. Rajdeep Roy is the BJP’s candidate from Silchar. On the same day, National People’s Party (NPP) has also released its first list of candidates for five Lok Sabha constituencies out of 14 in Assam. Nazia Yasmin Mazumder will fight from Silchar.

So as of now, it is certain that Silchar Lok Sabha constituency will witness a triangular contest among Sushmita, Rajdeep and Nazia. NPP started its Assam unit on March 6 this year and announced that it will contest from all the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Northeast. However, NPP does not have any mass support base in Assam.

Political analysts are of the view that the fight for Silchar will culminate in a tight finish. Though the chances of victory for Nazia seems to be less, yet she will succeed in snatching away the votes which would otherwise have been secured by the Congress. So if she succeeds in creating a divide in the Congress vote bank by securing a somewhat share of the minority votes, than the chances of Dr. Rajdeep Roy will be bright. Whatever may be the outcome, but it is for certain that the Lok Sabha Election 2019 will not be a cake walk for the Congress.

The first phase for 91 seats is scheduled on April 11 and the second for 97 seats on the April 18, 2019. The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats is being conducted over seven phases till May 19th, 2019. Silchar will go for the polls on 18 April. Counting of votes will take place on 23 May , 2019.
