TMC urges BJP to ensure safety of Bengalis in Assam
February 12: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Dinesh Trivedi and Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury raised the issue of the reported killings of Bengalis in Assam during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi informed the House that a TMC delegation has visited Assam. “Bengalis in Assam are being killed in broad daylight.” He further said that “Bengal has always been pro-India. Dirty politics of the BJP has to stop and you must stop killing of Bengalis in Assam.”
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the congress said that Bengalis move out of West Bengal in search of livelihood but do not feel safe in Gujarat, UP and Assam. He said that Bengalis are being killed in Assam and that the centre should ask them to ensure safety of Bengalis. There were media reports of killing of migrant labourers from West Bengal.
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharply criticised the Narendra Modi government and said “dirty politics” is going on in the name of publication of the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. She further accused the centre of using NRC as a ‘ploy’ of the Centre to “drive away Bengalis from Assam.”
