Tarun Gogoi rescued Assam from a period of darkness & led it for 15 years: Himanta Biswa
Nov. 23: Though both Tarun Gogoi and Himanta Biswa Sarma positioned themselves in the political arena, yet the former wrote a befitting obituary to his past mentor on his death on Monday. Taking to his twitter handle, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “A man of grand vision & extraordinary passion, Sri Tarun Gogoi was an intensely people’s man, focused on progress & enjoyed support of all . I was lucky to have worked under him. He rescued Assam from a period of darkness & led it for 15 yrs ensuring a new phase of development.”
In another tweet, Himanta wrote, “The loss of Shri Tarun Gogoi is huge & his absence will mean a vacuum in Assam’s politics that shall be difficult to fill. I offer my condolences to the bereaved family & pray to God to give his soul eternal peace. Om Shanti.”

Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi breathed his last at 5.34 PM on Monday in Gauhati medical College & Hospital (GMCH). He was 86. The three-time CM has been on life-support during the past two days following multi-organ failure on 21 November.

Announcing the news of Gogoi’s demise on Monday evening, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his body will be taken first to his official residence and from there, it will then be kept at Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra for the people to pay their last tribute to their beloved leader. His last rites will be performed with full state honour.
