ওয়ে টু বরাক, ৪ সেপ্টেম্বর : আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাস্তু ও পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে বৃহস্পতিবার এক বিশেষ বক্তৃতার আয়োজন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানের বিষয় ছিল ‘বৈশ্বিক ও স্থানীয় প্রেক্ষাপটে বর্তমান বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণের চিত্র’। বক্তা ছিলেন উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের অন্যতম প্রধান জীববৈচিত্র্য সংরক্ষণ সংস্থা ‘আরণ্যক’-এর মহাসচিব ও নির্বাহী পরিচালক ড. বিভব কুমার তালুকদার। বিকাল ৩টায় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কনফারেন্স হলে আয়োজিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বরিষ্ঠ অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী। স্বাগত বক্তব্য রাখেন বিভাগীয় প্রধান অধ্যাপক অপরাজিতা দে।

ড. তালুকদার পরিবেশ রক্ষায় নাগরিকদের সাংবিধানিক অধিকার ও দায়িত্বের ওপর আলোকপাত করেন। বিশেষভাবে তিনি অনুচ্ছেদ ২১ (জীবনের অধিকার) ও অনুচ্ছেদ ৫১(ক)(জি) (পরিবেশ রক্ষার মৌলিক কর্তব্য)-এর প্রসঙ্গ উল্লেখ করেন। তিনি শিক্ষার্থী ও নবীন গবেষকদের জন্য ওয়াইল্ডলাইফ বায়োলজি ও পরিবেশবিদ্যায় সম্ভাবনাময় সুযোগগুলির কথা তুলে ধরে তাদের সক্রিয় অংশগ্রহণের আহ্বান জানান। তিনি সরকারি ও জনসচেতনতামূলক নানা উদ্যোগের কথা উল্লেখ করেন।

আরণ্যক পরিচালিত বিভিন্ন প্রকল্প ও কার্যক্রমের উল্লেখ করে ড. তালুকদার গণ্ডার, বাঘ, হুলুক গিবন, সোনালি বানর ও হাড়গিলা সারস পাখির মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রাণী সংরক্ষণের প্রচেষ্টার বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা দেন। বক্তৃতার এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশে ড. তালুকদার শিকার ও পাচারের হুমকি এবং এর সুদূরপ্রসারী পরিবেশগত প্রভাব নিয়ে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেন। তিনি অবৈধ বন্যপ্রাণ বাণিজ্য রুখতে সমন্বিত উদ্যোগের প্রয়োজনীয়তার ওপর জোর দেন। শেষে ধন্যবাদ সূচক বক্তব্য পেশ করেন বিভাগীয় সহযোগী অধ্যাপক ড. পান্না দেব। অনুষ্ঠান সঞ্চালনা করেন গবেষক প্রিয়াঙ্কা সরকার।

Way2barak, September 4 : The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar, hosted an insightful lecture on “Current Wildlife Conservation Scenarios in the Global and Local Context” on Thursday. The distinguished speaker was Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, Secretary General and Executive Director of Aaranyak, a leading biodiversity conservation organization in Northeast India. The program, which began at 3:00 p.m. in the Conference Hall, was inaugurated by Prof. Aparajita De, Head of the Department, in presence of Prof. Parthankar Choudhury. Prof. Dey warmly welcomed Dr. Talukdar. The session was anchored by Priyanka Sarkar, Research Scholar of the Wildlife Conservation Lab of the Department.

In his address, Dr. Talukdar shed light on the constitutional rights and responsibilities of citizens in protecting nature, with special reference to Article 21 (Right to Life) and Article 51A(g) (Fundamental Duty to protect the environment). He spoke about the opportunities for students and young researchers in the fields of wildlife biology and ecology, encouraging youth engagement in conservation efforts.

Dr. Talukdar provided an overview of governmental and community-driven initiatives across India, particularly in the biodiversity-rich Northeast. He highlighted the work of Aaranyak in wildlife conservation and management in Assam, including efforts to protect flagship species such as the Rhinoceros, Tiger, Hoolock Gibbon, Golden Langur, and the Greater Adjutant Stork. Addressing the persistent threat of poaching, Dr. Talukdar discussed its far-reaching ecological consequences and emphasized the urgent need for multi-stakeholder action to combat illegal wildlife trade. He also shared details about Aaranyak’s ongoing projects and internship opportunities, aimed at equipping young people with practical knowledge and skills in wildlife research and conservation.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Panna Deb, Associate Professor, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, who lauded Dr. Talukdar’s inspiring insights and expressed gratitude for his valuable contribution. The event was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students, who engaged enthusiastically with the speaker, making the program a remarkable step toward spreading awareness on conservation challenges and opportunities in India and beyond.
