Unique Initiative: Divers to collect non-biodegradable inorganic matters from Barak after immersion

October 8: Cachar District Administration has taken in hand a new initiative to lessen water pollution of river Barak on the day of idol immersion. The idols of Goddess Durga are decorated with a variety of substances, some of them are also inorganic, which are non-biodegradable. These inorganic substances cause river pollution. The new step adopted by the district administration will go a long way in curbing water pollution.

Speaking to newsmen, Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar said, “We have tried to implement a new initiative this year during the process of idol immersion. After the idols are immersed at Sadarghat, expert divers will be there within 100 meters of the spot of immersion. they will collect all the inorganic non-biodegradable substances present in the idols before they get drowned in the water. This is an collective effort wherein we have discussed the issue with the honourable MLA’s MP and minister. We are hopeful that by adopting this measure we will be able to curb river pollution by segregating inorganic materials from the water.”

Wearing a saree in traditional Bengali pattern, South Indian Laya Madduri wished all the inhabitants of the district a very happy and prosperous Bijoya Dashami. She also appealed to all puja committees to complete the immersion in peace.

Regarding immersion, DC Madduri further said, “Immersion will also continue on Wednesday. From the last year’s experience, I have been informed that today immersion will continue till around 4 AM. I hope that like the previous years, the entire process will be completed peacefully.”

As regards security arrangement, Laya Madduri said, “There is round the clock security arrangement. Both NDRF and SDRF teams are also ready so that before any disaster occurs, they could jump into action. Further, SDRF and NCC volunteers are also stationed at the immersion ghat to provide service to the puja committees. I further request the puja committees to segregate the inorganic materials from the idols as far as possible before immersion. I once again extend my best wishes to all on Bijaya Dashami and Dusshera.”
