South Point School Guwahati to provide full scholarship & hostel facilities to young aspiring chess players of Assam

Feb. 7: South Point School, Guwahati will provide full scholarship along with hostel facilities to any young promising chess player of Assam who are in need of support to pursue their education and chess.The students will be trained in its in-house chess academy and will get the opportunity to play in various National and International Chess tournaments.

South Point School, Guwahati has been promoting chess since the year 2009 and regularly hosts various school, district, state, national as well as international level chess tournaments. The school imparts full time chess training to all its students as part of school curriculum besides running an after school training program. It is the first school of Assam to include chess as an co-scholastic subject in the year 2009. The School has a dedicated chess hall where 100 players can play and learn chess together. Further, South Point School Chess Academy will host an International FIDE Rated Chess Tournament with total Prize money of Rs.10 lakh in the month of December 2022.

The announcement was made by Krishnanjan Chanda, Principal of the School during the Online Prize distribution ceremony of the All Assam Online Team Chess Championship that was organised by South Point School today. In the team championship in which 12 districts of Assam participated, Dibrugarh team emerged as the champion followed by Cachar team as 1st Runners Up and Jorhat team as 2nd Runners Up. The Guwahati team secured the 4th Position, while Karbi Anglong was placed in the 5th position.

Dhruv Phukan of Dibrugarh and Mayank Chakraborty of Guwahati were awarded the best player award. A total prize money of Rs 20,000 was distributed among the winners.
