Silchar sets eco-example with launch of ‘Women for Trees’ Phase-II

way2barak, June 20:: A remarkable wave of green consciousness swept through Silchar as Phase-II of the visionary ‘Women for Trees’ initiative was launched, marking a significant milestone in the city’s eco-development journey. This transformative project, a collaborative brainchild of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), under the aegis of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, has found vibrant expression in Silchar through the efforts of the Silchar Municipal Board.

In a powerful blend of environmental sustainability and grassroots empowerment, the initiative aims not only to enhance the green cover in urban India but also to provide livelihood opportunities to women Self-Help Group (SHG) members in AMRUT-covered cities. Silchar had already paved the way by identifying the plantation site at the Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre near Cachar College on 21st May 2025. Building upon this groundwork, Phase-II was brought to life on 19th June 2025 with the planting of 50 saplings,a mix of medicinal and fruit-bearing trees.

This green effort saw enthusiastic participation from the Executive Officer, officials of the Silchar Municipal Board, and SHG members who joined hands in planting the trees. What sets this initiative apart is its sustainable model the planted saplings are now under the tender care of the SHG members, who have been entrusted with their maintenance and are being remunerated for their efforts. This model seamlessly integrates ecological restoration with livelihood generation, making it a movement of both purpose and compassion.

‘Women for Trees’ is more than just a campaign, it is a symbol of community-driven resilience where women rise as the custodians of nature. As Silchar leads by example, this movement is poised to blossom across the nation, nurturing not just trees, but a culture of empowered environmental stewardship.

This is stated in a press release issued from Regional office of Information & Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
