Retd Sr. Scientist of CPCRI & Sebayit of Radhamadhab Dr Ashish Kr Roy passes away

Jan. 20: In an unfortunate incident, Dr Ashish Kumar Roy, retired Senior Scientist of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCIR), Govt of India breathed his last at 12.30 AM on 20 January at a private hospital in Guwahati. He was 74. Dr Roy suffered a major cardiac arrest on Wednesday night. Immediately, he was rushed to a private hospital in Guwahati where he passed away within half an hour. His body was then brought to his residence at Lochan Bairagi Road, Silchar and was cremated the same day. The last rites were performed by his nephew Dr Abhishek Ray.

Dr Ashish Kumar Roy was also associated with a number of institutions and their activities. He was also the Sebayit of Radhamadhab Akhra, Bilpar since 1980. He was a member of the donor family of Radhamadhab College. An active member of Rotary Club of Guwahati (West), Dr Roy was involved with many philanthropic activities. For his contribution in the field of plantation crops research in North East India, Dr. Ashish Kumar Roy was conferred the lifetime achievement award by the then Governor of Assam.

Son of Late Hrishikesh Saha and Late Shefalikona Saha, Dr Ashish Kumar Roy was born in the year 1948. He completed his M.Sc in Botany from Gauhati University and then did P.hD from the same institute before joining CPCRI. He earned wide fame for his research activities in plantation crops in North East India.

Dr Ashish Kumar Roy lost his wife Ratna Roy in the year 2007. He is survived by two of his younger brothers Er. Angshu Kumar Roy and Dr Anup Kumar Kumar, two sisters Dr Ashima Roy and Ashita Saha and a host of kith and kin. The death of Dr Roy was mourned by many. Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, BJP District President Bimolendu Roy, Principal of Radhamadhab College, Dr Debashish Roy and many others went to Silchar crematorium to pay their last tribute to Dr Ashish Kumar Roy.
