Sexual harassment of Student, Professor of Assam University arrested

A shameful incident again occurred at Assam University, Silchar. A Professor was arrested on charges of sexual harassment at work place. The allegation of sexual harassment was brought by his student.

Police Superintendent Rakesh Raushan said that after receiving the complaint they have immediately done the initial investigation. After that, Assistant Professor of Arabic Department, Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya was arrested from his house at night. Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya is also the head of the department of Arabic of Assam University, Silchar.

It has been learnt that the female student who lodged the complaint against Barbhuiya completed her Masters in Arabic in this year. She alleged that in the month of May2018, when she was studying in M.A 4^th Semester, her teacher Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya called her to his chamber and molested her there. She also said that in her entire tenure of a student in the varsity, Barbhuiya mentally tortured her on many pretexts. The degree of mental harassment increased after the incident which happened in his chamber. He regularly threatened her with dire consequences if she informed anything to university authority. The girl further informed the police that she has videos with her to prove her point.

Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya was booked under Section 354 of IPC. He was produced in the court today. The court directed him to be sent to the prison. On the flip side, the accused teacher Barbhuiya claimed that he was innocent and has been wrongfully framed by the girl. The judge, however, failed to believe the view of Barbhuiya. Turning down his bail petition, the court directed to take him in judicial custody.
