President of Cachar College Students’ Union writes to DC Cachar; demands removal of Principal
way2barak, Sept.26: The prestige of Cachar College, a reputed institution of higher studies in Barak Valley, has been marred in the media and public domain in recent times due to various unwanted happenings. On 21 September, a section of the students allegedly misbehaved to the extreme degree with the teachers of the college at the instigation of the Principal. This was stated in a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar by the President of the Cachar College Students’ Union (CCSU) on Monday. Apart from the President, the other signatories to the said memorandum are Vice President of CCSU, Editor of Students’ Magazine, Assistant Sports Secretary and some other students of the college.
The signatories on behalf of Cachar College Students’ Union (CCSU) strongly condemned the physical assault and intimidation unleashed on the Teachers, non-teaching staff and members of the media by a handful of “student” hooligans at the behest of the principal of Cachar College, Sri Siddhartha Sankar Nath on 21st September, 2022. This was a pre-planned conspiracy of the Principal. They wrote, “This sinister and deplorable design of the Principal, Cachar College, to pit a section of the students against the teachers has been foiled by the students themselves. We along with a large number of students have come out in the open and have stood by our ‘Gurus’ at this hour of crisis.”
“This is not a new phenomenon. Since his joining, he has been patronizing some students whom he uses to achieve his ulterior motives. The Principal remains busy in such unwanted activities and does not pay any heed to our academic needs. The Higher Secondary results were declared in the month of May, 2022. But till now, our Principal has not given any notice for starting of classes of the new students. We strongly denounce such anti-student attitude by the Principal,” stated N.Leisemba Khengauba, President of CCSU.
The Vice President of CCSU said, “The situation became worst on 21 September 2022, when he instigated some students clearly to intimidate the teachers who have been protesting against his dictatorial attitude of functioning. Even when those students under his undue shelter were insulting and harassing the teachers, pushing and shoving them including the lady teachers in that fateful afternoon, the Principal did nothing to save his colleagues. When we later on came to know of his misdeeds, we came out openly against the Principal and that group of unruly students and stood in solidarity of our respected teachers.”
In the memorandum submitted to the DC Cachar on Monday, the students representing CCSU raised two prime demands:
- To remove Mr Siddhartha Sankar Nath as the Principal of our college, so that we can live in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility and continue our studies under the able guidance of our respected teachers.
- To provide befitting punishment to the group of students who misbehaved and exhibited hooliganism against our teachers.
