President appoints Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India

Aug. 10: In a significant development, accepting the recommendation made by the outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI), NV Ramana, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th CJI. The 48th Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, will retire on 26 August. Justice Lalit was appointed judge at the Supreme Court in 2014. He had enrolled as an advocate in June 1983.
