District Administration Cachar observes Shahid Divas

way2barak, December 10 : The District Administration, Cachar commemorated Shahid Divas with solemnity and deep patriotic sentiment on Wednesday. The observance began with the live streaming of the State-level Shahid Divas programme from Guwahati at 11 AM at the New Conference Hall of the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar.
A district-level programme followed at 12:30 PM at the DC office premises, where officials, artists, students, and members of the public gathered to pay respectful homage to the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement whose sacrifice between 1979 and 1985 continues to inspire generations. The event reflected Cachar district’s unwavering solidarity with the rest of Assam in honouring the brave souls who laid down their lives for the protection of Assam’s identity and integrity.
The programme witnessed the esteemed presence of Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Chief Executive Officer of Cachar Zilla Parishad, Pranab Kumar Bora, Assistant Commissioner Anjali Kumari, Assistant Commissioner and IC, DDIPR Barak Valley Zone, Deepa Das, Cultural Development Officer, Snehangshu Roy along with officials and staff of various departments.
Artists from the cultural fraternity of Silchar also participated in the commemoration, joining the staff of the DC Office and school students in rendering Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s timeless tribute “Swahid Pranamo Tomak.” Their collective performance elevated the emotional depth of the occasion and paid a heartfelt musical homage to the martyrs.
In his compelling address, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty reflected on the tremendous courage shown by the martyrs of the Assam Movement. He emphasized that the movement was not just a historical episode but a defining moment in Assam’s socio-cultural journey. He said the sacrifice of 860 martyrs stands as a reminder of the value of preserving identity, culture, and linguistic pride. MLA Chakraborty urged the youth to imbibe the spirit of unity, responsibility, and dedication to the state’s progress.
Earlier, Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Yadav delivered an elaborate and thoughtful address, underlining the significance of the day in strengthening the collective memory of the State. He stated that although Cachar did not witness any martyr during the Assam Movement, the district stands emotionally and culturally united with every part of Assam. He stressed that Shahid Divas is not just an annual ritual but a moral reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the honour of the State.
DC Yadav urged all residents to pay their respects at the Shahid Memorial in Boragaon as a mark of gratitude, describing it as a pilgrimage of remembrance. He also highlighted the responsibility of the present generation to preserve peace, promote harmony, and uphold the ideals for which the martyrs laid down their lives. He reiterated the district administration’s commitment to promoting awareness about the contributions of the martyrs and ensuring that the younger generations remain connected to Assam’s historical and cultural ethos.
The observance concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the values of unity, respect, and integrity, ensuring that the legacy of the martyrs continues to guide the journey of a strong and harmonious Assam.
