People of Silchar were very angry upon the political leaders, asserts CM during his visit to Karimganj

July 1: In view of the unprecedented flood that hit Karimganj district, affecting 544 villages, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the flood affected areas of the district and asked the district administration to reach out to people and expeditiously carry out survey to assess the number of houses and fisheries damaged by flood to enable the government to undertake rehabilitation and reconstruction works at the earliest.

During his visit to flood hit areas, the Chief Minister wading through the flood water, visited Srirampur village located at Ratabari Constituency. Since the village is surrounded by flood water, he took a boat to reach out to that village and talked to the marooned people. He, however, appreciated the resilience shown by the flood affected people in that village who coped with their hardships bravely. He asked the DC to ensure that the villagers get adequate quantity of relief. He also asked him to take steps to repair their damaged houses and help their rehabilitation process once the flood waters recede.

While on NDRF boat, the Chief Minister was accompanied by MLA’s Bjoy Malakar and Krishnendu Paul & Jayanta Mallah Baruah. In a 30 seconds video clip that has gone viral, MLA Paul was heard saying, “Our leaders in Silchar has not done any work.” To this Chief Minister Dr Sarma responded, ” Oh Yeah, People of Silchar were very angry upon the local political leaders.” The CM then asked, “What had the leaders done in Silchar?” To this, Jayanta Mallah Baruah in that boat said, “These leaders in Silchar were doing meetings at their houses or with the DC in her office, whereas, the people expected the leaders to reach out to them physically and see their problems.”

Taking to his twitter handle, the Chief Minister wrote, “Reached out to affected people of flood-hit Srirampur village in Karimganj by boat as its surroundings are still submerged. Impressed to see the resilience of people who are coping with their hardships. Asked the DC to take necessary steps for relief.”

It may be noted that the current wave of flood has affected more than 3.75 lakh people, damaging 5615 hectare crop areas including widespread damage to lives and properties in Karimganj district.
