May 23: When most of the areas of Silchar is under the grip of severe flood, Dhaga – a Silchar based NGO decided to work towards helping the flood affected victims of various parts of the district. It started with raising funds online through UPI and Bank Transfer and later along with the members and volunteers, the relief kit distribution was started.
The distribution started from May 19, 2022 with Cachar High School. On the first day, the NGO made relief kits, which had mosquito repellent, candles, match sticks, puffed rice (Muri), Biscuit and sanitary pads for women, which Dhaga manufacturers themselves. On the first day, more than 120 people were served. Similar relief distribution was carried out on the next day as well at Joykumar Balika Bidyalay, where over 180 people received the relief kit. On the third day, that is May 21, Malugram Girl’s School was the centre, where more than 320 people were served with the same kit.
For the fourth day, the NGO was informed that people of Karatigram- Shimultala are the worst sufferers and they couldn’t go to any relief camp and have settled on the road using makeshift tents. Hundreds of tents in the entire stretch of the road with more than 1000 people. Their homes were entirely submerged under water and were helpless. The victims told Dhaga that the government has not provided them with any relief materials. They were in deep crisis of drinking water and were forced to drink the water from the river directly. This water even after boiling was foul and smelly. It even made them sick.
When Dhaga visited them on Saturday, they appealed to provide them with drinking. Accordingly, on the next day, the volunteers of Dhaga reached the spot with packaged drinking water which was served to 400 families who took shelter on the road. Over 4000 litres of water was distributed by the NGO. The people of this place demands urgent attention from the District Administration and the legislators. This makeshift village has also reported one death today due to diarrhoea.
