Panel Discussion on Union Budget in Economics Dept of Assam University
way2barak, 7 February : A panel discussion on ‘Union Budget 2023-24’ was held on Monday under the aegis of the Department of Economics, Assam University, Silchar.
Alok Sen, Dean, Mahatma Gandhi School of Economics and Commerce, Assam University, Niranjan Roy, senior professor of the Department of Economics, Assam University and Joydeep Biswas, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Cachar College were on the panel.
Sagarika Dey, Assistant Professor from the organizing department moderated the session.
Dey opened the panel by presenting a brief background of the Budget. She emphasized that while India is the fastest growing emerging economy and had attained phenomenal success in critical areas like poverty reduction, global uncertainties such as Russia-Ukraine war and possibilities of a global recession continued to pose significant challenges to the Indian economy.
Alok Sen, speaking at the event, dwelt on the need to promote skill formation among the youth in order to reap the demographic dividend and ensure inclusive development. He also maintained that sustaining the growth momentum was essential for achieving the goals laid down for a long trajectory.
Joydeep Biswas underscored the need for reading the fine-print of the budget in order to ascertain the emerging pattern of resource allocation. He expressed his concerns about growing economic inequality in India and how this could prove a challenge for poverty reduction. He stressed on distributive justice.
Niranjan Roy highlighted India’s growing economic prowess in recent years.
Ritwik Mazumdar, Head in-charge of the Department, and other faculty members also attended the event along with students and research scholars across disciplines.
The engaging session evoked tremendous interest among the audience and was followed by a stimulating interactive segment.
