On World Environment Day, model tea plantation done by the VC of Assam University along with Manager Rosekandy TE
June 5: Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar and Forest Department, Govt. of Assam jointly celebrated the World Environment Day, 2022 on 5 June. This year World Environment Day is celebrated with the “Only One Earth” theme.
The inaugural programme was organized at the conference hall of the Ecology and Environmental Science department today at 10 am. Prof. Ajit Kumar Das, Head Dept. of Ecology and Environmental Science welcomed the guests on the occasion. Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath, Registrar, Assam University, Silchar spoke on the economics of conservation and highlighted the sustainable development goals. This was followed by a lecture of Prof. Jayashree Rout, Dean, E.P. Odum School of Environmental Sciences, who spoke on the essence of a good environment and the impact of climate change.
P. Sivakumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, Southern Assam Circle and I. B. Ubadhia, Manager Rosekandy Tea Estate were the two guests of honour, who also spoke on the do’s and don’t’s of environmental conservation. Other speakers during the occasion were Tejas Mariaswami, Divisional Forest Officer, Cachar and Prof. Parthankar Choudhury from the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science. The Chief Guest of the Occasion, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, Vice Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar spoke about the serenity and beneficence of the environment and urged everybody to follow the principle of nature conservation. The programme ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Panna Deb, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science.
The inaugural session was followed by a plantation programme in the university campus by the dignitaries, guests, faculties and staff of the university and forest department, researcher scholars and students of the university. A model tea plantation was also started in a slope adjoining the residential area of the university. The Vice Chancellor along with the Manager of Rosekandy TE in presence of teachers & staff planted the tea saplings. The faculty members, staff, students and research scholars of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar took active part to make the programme a grand success. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Aparajita De and Dr. Panna Deb.
