Omicron variant reaches Northeast; 1st case detected in Manipur

ওয়েটুবরাক, ২৭ ডিসেম্বর: মণিপুরে ওমিক্রন রোগীর সন্ধান মিলল। উত্তর-পূর্বে এই প্রথম কারও দেহে করোনার নবীনতম সংস্করণটি ধরা পড়ল

পূর্ব ইম্ফলের ওই ব্যক্তি তানজানিয়া থেকে এসেছিলেন। ২১ ডিসেম্বর তাঁর কোভিড ধরা পড়ে। জেনোম সিকোয়েন্সিংয়ের জন্য নমুনা পাঠানো হয়েছিল। সোমবার ওমিক্রন নিশ্চিত হয়। ওই ব্যক্তিকে জওহরলাল নেহরু হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়েছে। তাঁর পরিবারের বাকি তিন সদস্যেরও করোনা ধরা পড়েছে। তাঁদের নমুনাও জেনোম সিকোয়েন্সিংয়ের জন্য পাঠানো হয়েছে।

রাজ্য স্বাস্থ্য দফতর জানিয়েছে, বিদেশ থেকে মণিপুরে আসা ৪৬২ জনের মধ্যে ১৪ দিন কোয়রান্টিনের মেয়াদ পার করা ১৫৫ জনের সকলেরই কোভিড পরীক্ষার ফল নেগেটিভ হয়েছে। নজরদারিতে থাকা বাকি ৩০৭ জনের মধ্যে ১৯৪ জনের কোভিড পরীক্ষায় চার জনের করোনা ধরা পড়েছে। সবাই হাসপাতালে ভর্তি। ওমিক্রনের মতো উত্তর-পূর্বের প্রথম করোনা রোগীও শনাক্ত হয়েছিল মণিপুরেই।

Dec. 27: Omicron variant of Covid-19 has found its way to North East India. On Monday, the 1st case of Omicron was detected in Manipur. A 48-year-old man, who recently had returned from Tanzania has been tested positive for Omicron. It needs mention here that even the 1st instance of Covid-19 in North East was reported from Manipur in 2020.

In a press release issued by the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur on 27 December, 2021, it was stated that OMICRON variant of SARS-COV2 has been detected in an international passenger coming from Tanzania to the state. After testing positive for COVID-19 on RT PCR on the 8th day of arrival in India, sample was sent for Whole Genome Sequencing to Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Takyelpat. The person is already on facility isolation in a government hospital in Imphal.

The release further stated “as the Omicron variant is spreading fast in various countries, all are to adhere to COVID appropriate behaviour and wear masks mandatorily. Masks have been found effective against all variants of COVID-19.”

There has been a substantial jump in the number of Omicron cases on Monday in India, thereby giving rise to fear among the people about a probable third wave knocking at the doors. India has registered a surge in Omicron cases as the country’s tally reached 578 on Monday. Delhi has recorded the most cases of Omicron in the country (142), followed by Maharashtra (141), Kerala (57), Gujarat (49) and 43 (Rajasthan), the Health Ministry said in a bulletin.
