NRC: Mass rally rock the streets of Hailakandi

November 17: A mass rally organised by Joint Movement Organizing Committee formed by Citizens Rights Protection Coordination Committee (CRPCC), Assam rocked the streets of Hailakandi on Saturday.

The main objective of organizing the mass rally was to protest against the harassment meted out to the Bengali community of Assam in the name of NRC. The rally went through the heart of Hailakandi town which was attended by a large number of people raising slogans.

As the rally proceeded, it gradually started to grow long. People from every walk of life took part in this rally. It is estimated that around 1000 people walked on the streets asserting their demands. Men-women, school students, elderly, teachers, labourers all raised slogans in chorus.

Slogans were raised to accept any other relevant document as valid for proving one’s citizenship along with the 15 documents accepted by the Supreme Court in this regard, to reject the decision of re-examining 10 percent of the documents of those persons whose names have already appeared in the final draft list of NRC published on 30 July, to examine the documents of those whose names were not included in the final draft with a legal framework, to arrest those involved in merciless massacre at Dhola in Tinsukia and to give them exemplary punishment, objections raised by any persons if found to be false should be given punishment as per the main clauses of the Indian Citizenship Act etc

The participation of the children in the rally was noteworthy. Many school students were seen to carry different placards in the rally.

They forwarded their charter of demands to the government through the Deputy Commissioner.
