National Mathematics Day observed at Gurucharan College
way2barak, Dec.25: The National Mathematics Day was observed on 22nd December 2022 by the Department of Mathematics and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Gurucharan College on 22nd December 2022 in association with Assam Academy of Mathematics Cachar District Branch, Aryan Senior Secondary School and Ramanuj Gupta Senior Secondary School, Silchar.
This day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (22nd December 1887 to 26th Aprill 1920) who had made significant contributions in mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. During his short life span of just over 32 years, Ramanujan had given nearly 3900 results, many of which are still being studied by mathematicians all over the world. He was only the second Indian to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Dr. Bibhas Deb, Principal, Gurucharan College presided over the inaugural session in presence of Dr. Dipankar Kar, Director, Ramanuj Gupta Degree College, Mr. Purnadeep Chanda, Principal, Ramanuj Gupta senior Secondary School, Mr. Jayashish Mazumdar, Principal Aryan Senior Secondary School and Mr, Apurba Kumar Nath, President, AAM Cachar District Branch and Mrs. Jayee Nath, HOD Mathematics, Gurucharan College. The Chief Guest and the key resource person of the event was Prof. Bhaba Kumar Sarma, Professor of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati. He delivered an invited popular talk on mathematics later in the day.
Two renowned mathematics teachers Srimanta Dutta, Ex-Principal i/c and Ex-HOD Mathematics, Gurucharan College and Smt. Anjali Deshamukhya, Retired Subject Teacher of Mathematics, Govt. Girls’ HS and MP School, Silchar were felicitated for their relentless service to mathematics education. This year, the felicitation was co-sponsored by Ramanuj Gupta Senior Secondary School in memory of Late Biswajit Ghosh, a very popular mathematics teacher of Ramanuj Gupta Senior Secondary School who lost his life in a tragic accident a few months back.
As part of the celebration, a mathematical article writing competition and a mathematical quiz competition Mathwiz were organized. The winners of Mathwiz were Mr. Subhadip Roy and Ms. Jyoti Choudhury of Gurucharan College whereas Ms. Anuska Paul and Mr. Abul Afsar Laskar of KV ONGC
Srikona were the runners up. The winners were awarded trophies and books on mathematics sponsored by Gurucharan College. The winners of the Mathematical Article Writing Competition Ms. Basab Das Gupta, Ramanuj Vidya Mandir and Ms. Anuska Paul, KV ONGC Srikona were awarded trophies in memory of Late Krishna Tarat, a renowned mathematics teacher and ex-Principal of Chotelal Seth Institute. The other trophies were sponsored jointly by Gurucharan College, Aryan Senior Secondary School and AAM Cachar District.
Gurucharan College has also taken the initiative to felicitate three students of Barak Valley for achieving excellence in pursuing career in higher mathematics. This year, the students were Mr. Nirjhar Nath of Chennai Mathematical Institute, Mr. Sandipan Misra of ISI Kolkata and Ms. Monideepa
Bhattacharjee of IIT Madras. They were provided with books sponsored by Gurucharan College and mementos by AAM Cachar District.
Two students of Silchar had secured 5th and 2nd ranks in the state level Assam Mathematics Olympiad 2022. Mr. Om Paul from Kendriya Vidyalaya Silchar had secured the 5th rank in Category I of AMO and was awarded a cash award of Rs. 3000/- by Assam Academy of Mathematics and Praneshwar Kalita Memorial Award of Rs 2500/-. Mr. Sanjiban Paul of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Silchar had secured the the 2nd rank in Category III of AMO and was awarded a cash award of Rs 3000/- by Assam Academy of Mathematics and Prof. Bapukrishna Choudhury Memorial Award of Rs 1000/-. Both the rank holders were also awarded with books sponsored by Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, a mathematics teacher from Delhi. Mr. Ankit Kumar Dash, KV NIT Silchar received certificate of appreciation in Category I, Ms. M. Alisha Singha received certificate of appreciation in Category II and Mr. Tejas Shukla, KV Silchar received the certificate of merit in Category III.
The event ended with the prize distribution ceremony. Prizes, consisting of certificates and cash awards, of Pi-approximation Day quiz and Mathquiz organized by Palonghat Cluster were also awarded in the event.
