National Mathematics Day celebrated by AAM & Deptt. of Maths at GC College

Dec. 22: The Cachar District Branch of Assam Academy of Mathematics (AAM) celebrated the National Mathematics Day on 22nd December 2020 in association with Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College, Silchar. The day is celebrated all over the country to mark the birthday of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (22nd December 1887 to 26th April 1920). The inaugural session was graced by Sumit Sattawan, ADC, Cachar District as the Chief Guest in presence of Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nath, Vice-Principal, Gurucharan College and Dr. Rajasree Paul, Coordinator IQAC, Gurucharan College. Two renowned mathematics teachers, namely Mr. Apurba Kumar Nath, Sonai NGHS School and Mr. Parimal Chakraborty, Holy Cross HS School were invited as Guests of Honour. They were felicitated for their relentless service in imparting mathematics education at school level.

The inaugural session began with lighting of the lamp and offering floral tributes to Srinivasa Ramanujan. The General Secretary, AAM Cachar District Dr. Debashish Sharma delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the significance of National Mathematics Day and provided a brief description of the event. Speaking on the occasion, ADC Mr. Sumit Sattawan lauded the effort of Assam Academy of Mathematics in popularizing mathematics through such events and urged the students to study mathematics seriously.

Mr. Apurba Kumar Nath highlighted the importance of mathematics in our day to day lives and advised the students to develop problem solving skills. Mr. Parimal Chakraborty encouraged the students to excel in mathematics and develop moral thinking. He also recited a self-written poem as a tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan. Dr. Rajasree Paul appreciated the initiatives taken by AMM Cachar District and urged the administration as well as the AAM branch to focus on mathematics education for underprivileged students. Lastly, Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nath expressed his feelings on mathematics being a Physics teacher. He urged the students as well as teachers to make use of the latest technology in upgrading their knowledge and ideas.

A mathematical quiz competition “Mathwiz” was also organized for students of classes VIII to X. Five teams out of thirty four were shortlisted for the final quiz. Dr. Mridul Mohan Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Gurucharan College acted as the quiz master. After four interesting and competitive rounds, Subhadip Roy and Harsha Purkayastha from Silchar Collegiate School were adjudged the winners while Sanjiban Paul and Swapnoneel Das from Maharishi Vidya Mandir were adjudged the runners-up. Certificates and prizes were distributed among the participants. All the five finalists will be provided books to enhance their mathematical skills.
