Mudslide at Sonapur tunnel on NH-06 cleared after several hours, vehicles again started to move
way2barak, Sept.19: Heavy downpour this morning (19 September) has resulted in fresh mudslides at Sonapur Tunnel on NH-06. Since then, for several hours, the road was blocked resulting in long queue of vehicles. However, the clearing of the debris was taken in hand on a war-footing. However, at around 3.45 PM on Monday, the mudslide at Sonapur Tunnel was clearing and vehicles again started to move.
East Jaintia Hills police stated, “Commuters are advised to drive with caution and again needless to say please do not overtake.”
It needs mention here that due to landslide in the same area, the NH-06 was closed also in the 1st week of September. Commuters who got stranded suffered a lot after being stranded for long hours. However, within a fortnight, once again rainfall resulted in mudslide for which the road was blocked for several hours. It is in this connection that concerned citizens have raised the issue of an alternate land route for travelling from Silchar to Guwahati.
