MP Sushmita Dev writes to DC Cachar, appeal to provide relief to those outside the camps
May 24: The ongoing flood has affected a huge multitude of people in Cachar district. Although the river water has gone down considerably below the danger level, yet by then, many people were rendered homeless as river water flooded their home. However, there were many who till now were water locked and had not taken shelter in any relief camps. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has been going to many such remote areas in the last few days.
On the basis of her first hand experience of the situation, Sushmita Dev urged upon the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar to provide relief materials to even those who have not taken shelter in the relief camps. In the letter MP Dev wrote, “I would like to bring to your notice that during my field visit I have seen that thousands of people have taken shelter outside the Relief Camps on high level areas which are above water. They have been forced to leave their homes due to flooding in their houses. Also there are several people who are in their homes despite flooding as they do not want to abandon their homes. The policy of the Administration to give relief materials to those who have taken shelter in the Camps alone does not help the situation for those who are outside the official Govt. Relief Camps out of no choice.”
“I urge you to look into this matter and draw a transparent system to provide relief to those who are stranded in places outside the Relief Camps set up by the Administration. This has been done in the past also and I hope this can be implemented as early as possible,” added Ms Dev.
