This airport is catering to a population of almost 7 million people as the surrounding states are also using this airport. We have almost completed the process of land acquisition. Assam Govt has just passed the budget of making a new airport. My request to Scindiaji to consider setting up of a Greenfield at the earliest…”

Earlier, on 28 December, 2021, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy informed that, very soon a new international airport will come up in Silchar. Around 870 acre of land has been earmarked for the purpose. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will make an official announcement in this connection soon. Later on, during his visit to Silchar in January 2022, the Chief Minister informed that the new Civil Airport at Silchar with state-of-the-art facilities will come up at Dolu Tea Estate.
In the 1st week of March, 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Dolu Tea Company Private Limited and various trade unions BCSU, BVCMS, CITU, representing the tea garden workers on Monday in connection with setting up of a proposed greenfield airport in the tea estate.
As per a new proposal, around 2,500 bighas of land will be provided by the tea estate for construction of a Greenfield airport for Barak Valley under the initiative of Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy. An MoU was signed to protect the jobs of the tea garden workers so that the reduction in land pool does not result in job losses. The agreement also stated that upon receipt of compensation from the state government, all dues of the tea estate’s workers will be cleared and the company will not retrench or lay off any worker.
Meanwhile, Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on 16 March presented the state budget for the year 2022-23. In the said budget, proposal for new airports in Karbi Anglong and Silchar, along with three new heliports at Nagaon, Geleki and Haflong was passed. Further, ₹50 crore for acquisition of 870 acres of land for Greenfield Airport at Silchar was also sanctioned.
