Modi surpasses Indira Gandhi to become the second-longest continuously serving PM

New Delhi, July 25 : On Friday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a new milestone in Indian history. He has now become the second-longest continuously serving Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by Indira Gandhi. However, in terms of the overall longest time served as Prime Minister (including non-consecutive terms), he currently ranks third. Modi has served continuously as Prime Minister for 4,078 days.
From independence until 1964, Jawaharlal Nehru served as Prime Minister. He held the position continuously for 16 years and 286 days. After Nehru, Indira Gandhi held the record for the longest time as Prime Minister. In her first term, she served for 11 years and 59 days. As Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has already set several records. He is the first Prime Minister of India to be born after independence. He also holds the record for being the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. Additionally, he is the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state. Modi is the only non-Congress leader to complete two consecutive full terms as Prime Minister. He also made history by being the only non-Congress leader to secure a single-party majority in the Lok Sabha.
However, on the day he set this new record, Modi is not in the country. On Thursday, a free trade agreement was signed between India and the United Kingdom. To mark the occasion, the Prime Minister traveled to Britain. From there, he will head to the Maldives for an official visit.
