MLA Dilip Paul goes to Guwahati hospital, meets student injured in a blast in Assam Univ
March 13: MLA Silchar, Dilip Kumar Paul, went to Shankar Netralaya inn Guwahati and met Dipasha Sengupta, a student of M.Sc in the Department of Chemistry in Assam University, Silchar who sustained severe eye injury after a becker containing chemical fell down from her hand and burst in the laboratory. MLA Paul took stock of her health condition and assured Dipasha’s parents of all possible help. He also interacted with the doctors and urged to take proper care of the patient.
A total of 4 students were injured on Wednesday in the blast. All of them were immediately rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Out of the four injured, the condition of Dipasa Sengupta was serious and so was taken to Shankar Netralaya, Guwahati. The other three students who also were injured are Panchatapa Sen, Tanmoy Saha and Sourav Paul. However, Tanmoy Saha and Sourav Paul were released after primary treatment, whereas Panchatapa Sen was admitted at SMCH.
Professor Paritosh Chandra Mondal is just unable to reconcile himself to what happened on Wednesday afternoon. He is the Head of the Department of Chemistry of Assam University, Silchar. He said that he was in the department at the time of the accident. The students of M.Sc 2nd semester were working in the Chemistry lab. Dipasha Sengupta was heating an acidic mixture in a becker. All of a sudden, the bicker burst.
Dipasha was working with caution. She was wearing her apron for almost the entire time. In her eyes, she wore safety glass. Prof. Mondal said that the mishap happened just at that time when Dipasha opened her glass for a few seconds. Unable to bear the additional pressure, the becker cracked. As she had removed the safety glass from her eyes just then, the acidic mixture fell on her eyes. This is indeed very unfortunate, said Prof. Mondal.
Meanwhile, a 5-member committee was formed by Assam University to investigate cause of the blast. On 12 March, Register in-charge of the varsity formed the committee under Prof. Abhik Gupta, Pro-Vice Chancellor to do a detailed enquiry about the incident that occured in the laboratory of the Department of Chemistry. The committee was also asked to suggest measures so that such incidents do not occur in the future.
