Teak ‘smuggling’: Congress leader detained entire day & released at night

২৬ অক্টোবরঃ কাঠ পাচারে জড়িত থাকার অভিযোগে কংগ্রেস নেতা রাজেন পালিতকে আটকে রাখার ঘটনায় শুক্রবার শিলচর সদর থানা এলাকা থেকে ধলাই পর্যন্ত ছিল টানটান উত্তেজনা। মন্ত্রীর নির্দেশ, কংগ্রেসের থানা ঘেরাও ও সবশেষে পালিতকে মুক্তি দিয়ে আপাতত স্বস্তির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলে পুলিশ। ঘটনার  সূত্রপাত বৃহস্পতিবার রাত দুইটা নাগাদ। মিজোরাম থেকে দুই ট্রাক সেগুন কাঠ ধলাই হয়ে বিনা পারমিটে বেরিয়ে যাচ্ছে খবর পেয়ে বনমন্ত্রী পরিমল শুক্লবৈদ্য পুলিশ ও তাঁর মন্ত্রকের অফিসারদের গাড়িদুটি আটকানোর নির্দেশ দেন। দেরি না করে শিলচরের পুলিশবাহিনী বেরিয়ে পড়ে ধলাইর উদ্দেশে। পানিভরার কাছাকাছি এলাকায় তারা সেগুনকাঠ বোঝাই ট্রাকদুটি পেয়ে যান। সামনে একটি বোলেরোকে দেখে একেও আটকান। সেই বোলেরোতেই বসে ছিলেন নরসিংপুর ব্লক কংগ্রেস সভাপতি রাজেন পালিত। সঙ্গে আরও দুইজন। তিনজনকেই শিলচর সদর থানায় তুলে আনা হয়। ট্রাকদুটিও বাজেয়াপ্ত করা হয়।

শুক্রবার সারাদিন রাজেনবাবুদের থানায় বসিয়ে রাখা হয়। প্রতিবাদে কংগ্রেস নেতারা থানা ঘেরাও করেন। প্রাক্তন মন্ত্রী গিরীন্দ্র মল্লিক, প্রাক্তন বিধায়ক রুমি নাথ, অভিজিত পাল, রাজেশ দেব সহ শতাধিক কর্মী-সমর্থক পালিতের নিঃশর্ত মুক্তির দাবি জানান। ওসি-র সঙ্গে একপ্রস্ত উত্তপ্ত বাক্য বিনিময়ও হয়। শেষে রাত সাতটা নাগাদ রাজেনবাবুদের থানা থেকে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়।কংগ্রেসের অভিযোগ, রাজনৈতিক প্রতিহিংসা মেটাতেই পরিমলাবু রাজেন পালিতকে হয়রান করলেন।

স্পষ্ট করে বিভাগীয় কর্তারা কিছু না জানালেও এক সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে, সেগুন কাঠগুলি গুয়াহাটি যাচ্ছিল। বৈধ নথি সঙ্গে রয়েছে। ফলে গাড়িগুলিও ছেড়ে দেওয়া হচ্ছে। মন্ত্রী পরিমল শুক্লবৈদ্যর অভিযোগ, মিজোরাম থেকে বিনা পারমিটে কাঠ ঢোকার ঘটনা প্রায়ই ঘটে। তাতে শুধু প্রচুর রাজস্বই মার খায় না, প্রাকৃতিক ভারসাম্যও বিঘ্নিত হয়। ডিএফও সান্নিদেও চৌধুরী বলেন, সমস্ত কাগজপত্র ভালো করে পরীক্ষা করা হচ্ছে। এখনই কিছু বলা যায় না।

October 26: In a sensational incident on Friday, Congress leader Rajan Palit was detained for an entire day at Silchar Police Station on charges of smuggling Teak (segun) wood. This led to a tensed atmosphere in and around Silchar Police Station till Dholai. Orders of the minister, Police Station gheraoed by Congress, Rajan Palit detained entire day and released at night—a series of incidents made Cachar police pass a hectic day.

The incident took its birth at around 2 on Thursday night. Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya got the information that two trucks from Mizoram loaded with teak wood will pass through Dholai without permit. As such, the Minister ordered the police and the officers of his department to apprehend those two trucks. At once, Silchar Police started for Dholai. They saw the two trucks loaded with teak wood at a place called Panibhora. A Bolero car in front of the truck was also stopped. In that Bolero car was Rajan Palit, President of Narsingpur Block Congress along with two others. All three of them were brought to Silchar Police Station. The two trucks loaded with teak wood were also seized by the police.

The trio was detained inside the police station for the whole day. As a mark of protest, Congress supporters gheraoed the police station. Former Congress mister Girindra Mallick, ex-MLA Dr. Rumi Nath, Abhijit Paul, Rajesh Deb along with hundreds of Congress supporters demanded unconditional release of Palit. A round of alteration of words took place between the OC and Congress leaders. Finally, Rajan Palit and others were released by the police at around 7 PM. Congress has alleged that Parimal Suklabaidya scripted the entire drama to harass Mr. Palit so that he could settle his scores using political power.

Though the departmental officials are now revealing anything clearly, yet as per a source, it was learnt that the trucks carrying teak wood were going to Guwahati and had proper legal documents. That is why, the 3 persons who were detained were allowed to go along with the wood loaded trucks. After being released in the late evening, Rajan Palit said that it was a political plot designed by Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to defame him. He said that he was intentionally harassed. This was a plot to also defame Congress party. While Mr. Palit spoke with the media, Ex-minister Girindra Mallick and ex-MLA Rumi Nath were standing besides him.

On the other hand, Minister Parimal Suklabaidya alleged that incidents of smuggling wood from Mizoram takes place off and on. This is not only a cause of loss of revenue but it also creates negative impact on the environment. DFO Sannidheo Choudhury said that his team was examining all the relevant documents and so he is not in a position at this moment to make any comment on this issue.
