Ambubachi Mela to start from 22 June at Kamakhya temple

May 19: The Mahakumbha of the East, ‘Ambubachi Mela’, one of the largest auspicious congregation is going to be held in the Kamakhya temple of Guwahati. With the four-day annual Ambubachi Mela in the Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati starting from 22 June, 2019, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration is gearing up to ensure the festival goes off smoothly.

Ambubachi Mela will commence from the midnight of June 22 and conclude on the morning of June 26. Ambubachi Mela celebrates the annual menstruation cycle of Hindu Goddess Kamakhya, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. Kamakhya Temple is believed to be the site where Hindu deity Parvati’s womb and genitals fell after she was burned to death. During the Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple remain closed for three days.

Various security measures were discussed during the meeting for the smooth conduction of the religious fair. Police officials said that sufficient number of CCTV cameras will be installed at various places around Kamakhya temple for smooth conduction of the religious fair.
