Gautam Roy’s hope of joining BJP shattered into pieces

আরএসএসপন্থী কংগ্রেসি বলেই এতকাল বদনাম ছিল তাঁর। কিন্তু সময়ের পরিবর্তনে বিজেপিতে ঢোকার পথে আরএসএস-ই গৌতম রায়ের কাছে প্রধান প্রতিবন্ধক হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। হিমন্ত বিশ্ব শর্মার সঙ্গে আলোচনায় ৩ সেপ্টেম্বর জন্মাষ্টমীর দুপুরে তাঁর গেরুয়া খাতায় নাম তোলার কথা চূড়ান্ত হয়েছিল। হিমন্তবাবু নিজেও কংগ্রেস ত্যাগ করে বিজেপিতে এসেছেন। তাই কোন পথে হেঁটে কাকে খুশি করা যেতে পারে, গৌতমবাবুকে সবই বাতলে দিয়েছিলেন তিনি। বিজেপি-র একটি  বড় গোষ্ঠীর গৌতম রায়কে দলে নেওয়ার ব্যাপারে আপত্তি থাকলেও হিমন্ত বিশ্ব শর্মার সঙ্গে কথাবার্তার পরে কে আর তাঁকে বাধা দেয়। কিন্তু আরএসএস কর্মী সংহতির প্রশ্ন তুলে গৌতম রায়কে  স্বাগত জানানোর ব্যাপারে আপত্তি জানায়। এর পেছনে রয়েছে কাছাড় ও হাইলাকান্দির একাংশ বিজেপি নেতৃত্ব। তাঁরা স্পষ্ট আপত্তি তুলেছেন, কংগ্রেস আমলে তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে এত অভিযোগ আনা হয়েছিল যে, তাঁকে এখন মালা পরিয়ে বরণ করা হলে পুরনো কর্মীদের মনোবলে চিড় ধরবে। আর লোকসভা নির্বাচনে গৌতম রায়কে টিকিট দেওয়া হলে দলের বিরাট ক্ষতি হয়ে যাবে।

গৌতম রায় অবশ্য দলবদলের বাসনার কথা অস্বীকার করেছেন। তাঁর কথায়, তিনি কংগ্রেসে আছেন, থাকবেন। তবে তাঁর বক্তব্যকে বিশ্বাস করছেন না কংগ্রেস নেতৃত্ব। তাই গৌতমবাবুর বিজেপিতে যোগদানের কথায় প্রদেশ কংগ্রেস সভাপতি রিপুণ বরা জানিয়ে দেন, তিনি দলে না থাকলেও কোনও ক্ষতি হবে না।

তবে বিজেপিরই এক পদস্থ সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে, জন্মাষ্টমীর দিনটাকে বাঁচানো গেলেও হিমন্ত-গৌতম ছক কষা অব্যাহত রয়েছে। ফলে যে কোনও দিন তাঁর বিজেপিতে যোগদানের ব্যাপারে দলীয় নেতৃত্বের কাছে নির্দেশ আসতে পারে।

It was in the air for a long time that he was prepared to enlist himself in the saffron garrison. He too gave multiple hints of divorcing the coterie with whom he walked in the corridors of power for almost 2 decades. But ultimately spilling water over his hopes, BJP did not open the gateway for him. Yes, he is none other than former heavyweight Congress minister Gautam Roy.

Roy was attempting to change the cloak after he lost during the last assembly polls in 2016. But it seems that his stars did not favour him and it was a slip between the cup and the lip for him multiple times. During his first attempt, when all were eagerly waiting to see Roy joining the BJP, an untoward incident occurred and the ruling party decided to delay the announcement. The incident in question was the arrest of his onetime close aide, Gautam Gupta on charges of multi-crore scam.

Known for his indomitable tenacity, Gautam Roy is not a man to give up his ambition. His close ties with Himanta Biswa Sharma provided him impetus to walk on the path which was already treaded on by Mr. Sharma. Sources within the party revealed that Gautam Roy was all set to join BJP on the day of Krishna Janmasthami. A section of the media also knew about it and were ready with their cameras near the BJP office at Itkhola, Silchar to shoot the moment when Roy would be in the arms of Kabindra Purkayastha, Dilip Kumar Paul  or any others leaders of that stature. Though a major section of BJP had serious reservation of Roy joining the party, yet Himanta Biswa Sharma in his own style of functioning neutralized all such opposition. But again, things went against his strategy. Though Gautam Roy often claimed himself to be close to RSS, yet it is that same RSS which used their ‘veto power’ and thereby prohibited him to join BJP.

Even a section of BJP leadership from both Cachar and Hailakandi voiced their serious objection in allowing Roy to join BJP. They categorically stated that during the Congress tenure at the state, BJP brought so many allegations against him and so now it will be very difficult for them to embrace him. This they believe would cause negative impact on the mindset of the party workers. They also stated that the part will suffer in the long run if Gautam Roy was given the party-ticket during the Lok Sabha polls of 2019.

Speaking to newspersons, Gautam Roy has firmly denied the speculations over joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He asserted that he was there in the Congresss, he is still in the Congress and in future too, he will be in the Congress. But he now seems to be in a quagmire. None seems to take him at his face value. A few days back, Gautam Roy was the only Congress leader who joined the ‘Asthi Kalash’ immersion ritual of Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Silchar. State Congress President, Ripon Bora paid no heed to this entire episode. He rather said that, “It hardly matters whether Gautam Roy is there in the party or not.”

It’s now a matter of speculation, whether Mr. Roy’s dream of sitting in the Lok Sabha from Silchar constituency under the umbrella of Narendra Modi will at all be possible or not. Elite citizens have aired the opinion that in his attempt to achieve something big (read Lok Sabha MP from BJP), he may lose his assured ticket from Congress (for the post of MLA). Only time can say what awaits in the womb of future for Mr. Roy.
