Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud takes oath as 50th Chief Justice of India
way2barak, Nov.9: Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. President of India, Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Chandrachud at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 AM today.
Justice DY Chandrachud took over from former CJI UU Lalit who retired from office on Tuesday and
who was at the top post for a short tenure of 74 days. Justice Chandrachud will serve as the head of the Supreme Court for two years till November 10, 2024.
Justice Chandrachud holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi. He later completed LLB from Delhi University, and an LLM and a doctorate in Juridical Science from Harvard Law School in the USA.
His father was former Chief Justice of India YV Chandrachud. Justice Chandrachud and his father are the only father-son duo to have reached the position of the CJI in the country’s judicial history. His father was the 16th Chief Justice of India serving from 2nd February,1978 to 11Jul,1985.
