অল্পের জন্য রক্ষা পেলেন জওহরলাল নেহরু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রনেতা উমর খালিদ। আজ বিকেলে অজ্ঞাতপরিচয় দুষ্কৃতী তাঁকে লক্ষ্য করে গুলি চালানোর চেষ্টা করে। তাড়াহুড়োর মধ্যে গুলি না বের হওয়ায় প্রাণ বেঁচে যায় তাঁর।

খালিদ দিল্লির রফি মার্গের কনস্টিটিউশন ক্লাবের এক অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তৃতা করতে গিয়েছিলেন। ফেরার পথে এক চায়ের স্টলে সামনে এই ঘটনা ঘটে।

প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, আচমকা সাদা শার্ট পরা এক যুবক কোথা থেকে ছুটে গিয়ে তাঁকে প্রথমে ধাক্কা মারে।  মুহূর্তে পিস্তল তাক করে। খালিদ টাল সামলাতে না পেরে পড়ে যাচ্ছিলেন।  তখনই ওই যুবকের হাত থেকে পিস্তলটি পড়ে যায়। তাঁদের কথায়, আমরা যুবকটিকে ধরার চেষ্টা করি। সে পিস্তল ফেলেই দ্রুত পালায়।

উমর খালিদ ২০১৬ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে চর্চার কেন্দ্রে চলে আসেন। তখন দেশের তাবড় তাবড় নেতাদের রাতের ঘুম কেড়ে নিয়েছিলেন। সঙ্গে ছিলেন কানহাইয়া কুমার ও অনির্বাণ ভট্টাচার্য। পরে তাঁকে সংসদ ভবনে হামলার নায়ক আফজল গুরুর সঙ্গে সম্পর্কের অভিযোগে জেলে পোরা হয়েছিল।

আজকের ঘটনার পরে নিজের প্রতিক্রিয়ায় খালিদ বলেন, গত দুই বছর ধরে এত তথ্যের বেসাতি, অপপ্রচার, ঘৃণার পরিবেশ যে মানুষ ভয়ে কুঁকড়ে আছেন। সবাই জেনে গিয়েছেন, সরকারবিরোধী কথা বললেই রাষ্ট্রদ্রোহিতার অভিযোগে জেল খাটতে হবে।

পুলিশ জানিয়েছে, আজকের ঘটনার তদন্ত চলছে। ঘটনার পর রটে গিয়েছিল, তিনি গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়েছেন। আসলে দুষ্কৃতী গুলি চালানোর সুযোগই পায়নি। আচমকা হাত থেকে পড়ে যায়। বেঁচে গেলেন ছাত্রনেতা উমর খালিদ।

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid was shot at by an unidentified man outside Constitution Club of India on Rafi Marg in the national capital on Monday afternoon. He was, however, lucky enough to escape unhurt. Khalid went to the Constitution Club to attend an event titled ‘Khauff Se Azaadi’, organised by an organisation named ‘United Against Hate’.

According to an eyewitness, “There was an event and Umar Khalid had accompanied us. We were at a tea stall when a man in a white shirt came, pushed and opened fire at him. Khalid lost his balance and fell down and the bullet missed him. We tried to catch the man. The pistol slipped off his hands and he escaped.”

In February 2016, Umar Khalid along with Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya were charged with sedition and arrested in connection with a campus event relating to Afzal Guru, who was convicted for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack.

Reacting to the incident, Umar Khalid said that “For the last two years, there has been such disinformation, propaganda and a hateful campaign that has been spread across by certain media houses and troll armies of the ruling government, where anyone who opposes the present government or questions the policies of the present government is branded anti-national.” Police investigation into various angles of this attack is going on.
