“JNU is our top university,” says HRD Minister after 18 alumni crack UPSC IES exam

January 16: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi is the most talked about educational institution in India at present. JNU has been at the centre of month long protests by the students over a fee hike leading to a confrontation with the administration. But tensions escalated when on 5 January there was violence in the campus in which many teachers and students were severely injured.

However, overcoming all criticisms, 18 students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) qualified in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Indian Economic Service (IES) examination. What seems to be more noteworthy is that 18 out of 32 candidates who qualified IES exam  are JNU alumni. Further, one of the JNU students, Yashaswini Saraswat, secured the 8th rank in the examination. This is expected to be a silver lining at a time when JNU is rocked by controversies.

Expressing delight at this achievement, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank greeted the varsity and tweeted, “It is a matter of great pleasure that out of a total of 32 successful candidates in the prestigious Indian Economic Service (IES) examination, 18 are students of JNU. We always said that JNU is our top university in education and research.”

The results of the UPSC IES examination was declared on January 10, 2020. A total of 32 candidates qualified for IES and ISS examination this year. Indian Economic Service or IES exam, as it is commonly referred to, is taken by aspiring Economics postgraduates. Candidates with postgraduate degree in Applied Economics, Business Economics and Econometrics appear for the exam.
