May 6, 2024
way2barak, May 6: Significant step was taken towards combating drug addiction as the Outpatient Department for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OPD-OST) was inaugurated at S.K Roy Civil Hospital, Hailakandi today. The inauguration ceremony, graced by esteemed dignitaries including Dr. Sanket Kanu, Dr. Jakir Hussain, Dr. Amit Sinha, and Mr. Anup Kumar Dutta, CPM of ASACS, witnessed the presence of hospital staff and stakeholders.
OST is a pioneering intervention that involves substituting injecting opioid drugs with oral medication, effectively reducing cravings and withdrawals among individuals struggling with addiction. This therapeutic approach enables Intravenous Drug Users (IDUs) to discontinue injecting drugs, thus mitigating the associated health risks, including the transmission of HIV. The implementation of OST at S.K Roy Civil Hospital marks a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to address substance abuse and its adverse consequences.
The initiative underscores a concerted effort to provide comprehensive care and support to individuals grappling with addiction, fostering a healthier and more resilient community. It is hoped that the introduction of OPD-OST will not only alleviate the burden of drug-related harms but also pave the way for enhanced rehabilitation services and improved public health outcomes in the region.
