If high rate of contamination continues in Cachar, Cabinet may declare lockdown: Parimal

June 21: “It is known that the rate of contamination is high in Cachar district. Naturally, if in the next two days, the rate of contamination in Cachar continues to be high, then it would definitely be discussed in the cabinet meeting scheduled on Wednesday. If the cabinet feels that there is a necessity of declaring complete lockdown in Cachar, then the same would be declared.” This was stated by state Cabinet Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, while speaking with the journalists in Hailakandi on Monday afternoon.

On being questioned about the Covid situation in Hailakandi and Karimganj, the Minister replied, “In Hailakandi and Karimganj districts, the rate of contamination is low. Hailakandi has a contamination rate below 2 percent. In Karimganj district also, the spread of the virus is not like that of Cachar. In that case, there will be no necessity of lockdown in these two districts.

Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that as the Covid-19 cases in atleast 5 to 6 districts of Assam are still not under control, there are chances that the state government might go for strict restrictions including complete lockdown for atleast 10 days. He further added that the district-wise Covid situation will be discussed and analysed in the cabinet meeting which will be held on 23 June (Wednesday). A decision in this connection will be taken only after the review of the Covid situation in the districts.

The new Covid-19 guidelines issued on 6 June specifically stated that the “Districts where the total number of cumulative cases and per day cases are still showing persistently high numbers, especially Cachar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur and Nagaon will be under close watch till 21 June, 2021. In case, there is no improvement in the COVID status in these districts, stricter restrictions may follow.”
