Barak Valley registers 288 positive cases on Saturday

September 5: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Saturday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less in comparision to the previous days. A total of 288 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Friday, Barak Valley registered 347 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Saturday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 109 positive cases   (It was 146 on Friday)
  • Karimganj: 162 positive cases (It was 175 on  Friday)
  • Hailakandi: 17 positive cases (It was 26 on Friday)

In the last 24 hours, one person from the valley died due to Covid-19. The deceased was identified as Faizul Islam Laskar (62) from Hailakandi.

On Saturday, 109 persons tested COVID-19 positive in Cachar district. Out of the 109 new cases, 101 were detected positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and the rest 08 of them were found positive in RT-PCR Test. During the day, 1397 Rapid Antigen tests were done in Cachar.

Suman Choudhury further informed that the ward-wise screening centres in Silchar Municipal area will be discontinued from now. He said, “We received a very poor response at these 28 screening centres within the SIlchar town area. From now onwards COVID test can be done only Holy Cross School, Teachers Training College, Urban PHC and ISBT. The centres opened in the municipal wards will be discontinued.” He also said that till now, under the door-to-door campaign of detecting fever, 5,675 houses were covered. He added, “But unfortunately none came forward voluntarily and declared that they are suffering from fever or cold, when our teams reached their houses. In certain cases, many people refrained from coming out of their houses when our team went there. Some of them also exhibited rough behaviour with the mobile teams. As such, we have also decided to discontinue the door-to-door survey.”

Further, during the routine briefing, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) said that at present there are 177 active cases of novel coronavirus at SMCH. Out of them, 16 of them are in ICU, 2 in ventilator and 48 being administered oxygen. At present, the condition of 22 COVID-19 patients are critical. As of now, 74 persons have donated plasma at SMCH, which was given to 135 patients. In the last 24 hours, 1 person died at SMCH.

17 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district on Saturday, taking the total tally to 2,507. Health authorities here disclosed that of the 17 positive cases, 14 have been detected under the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) while three under RT-PCR. 653 swab samples, including 458 RAT have been taken on Saturday.

Altogether 1,309 cases have been found positive under RAT with over 50 per cent without travel history. 2,040 persons on being cured have been discharged from hospitals.The number of active cases is 450. Six COVID-19 positive patients have breathed their last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. 11 deaths at SMC&H have been declared as ‘non-COVID’ by the State level Death Audit Board. 155 COVID-19 afflicted persons are under home isolation.

On Saturday, 162 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected in Karimganj district.  Among them, 101 were detected post in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas, 53 tested positive in RT-PCR Test. During the day, 932 rapid tests were done in the district.

Apart from the valley, a total of 2,698 persons tested positive in Assam on Saturday, thereby taking the state tally to 1,23,922. As of now, there are 28,507 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 2,343 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 95,060 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 07 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 352.

India’s tally of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) reached 4,023,179 after 86,432 new cases were recorded across the country in the highest single-day spike, according to the Union health ministry on Saturday. The death toll in the country – third worst-hit after the United States – reached 69,561 after 1,089 patients succumbed to the viral disease between Friday and Saturday. India has registered over 80,000 new coronavirus cases for the third day in a row. As of Saturday, there are 846,395 are active cases, 21.04% of which account for India’s total caseload. After 70,072 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, the country’s recovery rate has reached 77.23%, according to the health ministry data.
