Green Summit in Silchar: MP Dr.Rajdeep Roy inaugurates Summit Secretariat
Oct. 5: Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy on Tuesday stressed on the need of a green environment in Barak Valley and the Northeast as a whole while speaking at the inauguration of the Secretariat of the Northeast Green Summit at Don Bosco Technical School campus here in Silchar.
The Summit, it may be mentioned, is the only sustainable development conclave of the region and is supported by United Nations Environment. It is to be held at Silchar between November 16 to 18th, 2021. The Summit is an initiative of the Vibgyor NE Foundation and the Sixth edition would be held in collaboration with NIT, Silchar and Don Bosco School, Silchar.
Roy, who later chaired a meeting after the Secretariat inauguration in his capacity as an Advisory Board Member of the Summit, took stock of preparations afoot for the Summit along with Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, NIT Director Shibaji Bandopadhay and authorities of Don Bosco School and Vibgyor NE Foundation.
Expressing his views, Dr Roy stated, “It is a matter of pride for us that after being held in premier institutions like IIT Guwahati and Shillong, we have been able to bring the Summit to Silchar. Now, let us work as a team to make it a grand success in Silchar and Barak Valley.” Silchar legislator Dipayan Chakraborty, in his speech, assured his full support to the Summit, where various dignitaries are expected to converge. “I am there for any assistance that may be required to make the Summit a success,” he said.
NIT Director Dr Shivaji Bandopadhaya, while expressing satisfaction that the Summit was being held at the green NIT campus, focused on the learning outcome of the entire event. “Participants from across the Northeast and the rest of the country are expected at the Summit,” he shared. “We are planning a cyclathon – Pedal for Green – prior to the event to raise awareness for a clean, green Northeast. The details will be announced shortly,” Reggie Cherikunnel, Director of Don Bosco Technical School and one of the organisers, announced.
Others who were present on the occasion included Michael Makri, Director, D.B.S. Youth Centre, Shillong besides Surjit Tigga, Don Bosco School Principal and Thomas , Rector of the Don Bosco School. It may be mentioned that Forest Ministers of all Northeastern states are expected to converge during the Summit at the Forest Ministers’ Round table.
