Governor Jagdish Mukhi tells Excise Minister to create awareness on evils of liquor consumption
March 15: In the backdrop of the death of more than 100 persons by consumption of spurious liquor in the state, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi urges upon the state government to conduct awareness programmes about the evil effects of liquor consumption. On Firday, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi called on Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and asked him to spread awareness on the adverse impacts of sulai and other intoxicating liquors on health.
The Governor told the state Excise Minister to bring in religious groups and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to initiate awareness campaigns at all levels especially in the tea garden areas to empower people and create a deterrent to work against brewing such spurious liquor. He also laid stress on conducting debates, motivational campaigns at public places such as markets, bus stand etc. so that awareness could be generated among the people at large.
In response, Parimal Suklabaidya informed the Governor that his government has already launched massive campaign to create awareness against the consumption of sulai. He also apprised that the state Excise Department has geared up in the aftermath of hooch tragedy in Golaghat & Jorhat and is involved in constant monitoring of the situation in the state.
