May 22: Minister for Environment and Forest, Parimal Suklabaidya appealed to the people to conserve biodiversity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity on Saturday.
In an impassioned plea, Minister Suklabaidya said when the world at large is reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic and there is lack of oxygen leading to fatalities, the need of the hour is to conserve Nature – it’s flora and fauna – for human race to survive. “It’s nature that gives solutions to our problems and keeps us alive,” he quipped.
Suklabaidya said that man and nature must live in communion and everyone must work relentlessly to conserve nature as ‘our very survival hinges on it’. The Environment and Forest Minister also appealed to the people to plant at least two to three saplings to make the world greener and the atmosphere laden with oxygen which is so vital against the backdrop of coronavirus scourge.
He said it’s time for introspection as to what we have done for conservation of nature and what we can do in near future. He said extension of the green cover will lead to increase in the level of oxygen so essential during the pandemic times.
A video coinciding with the International Day for Biological Diversity was also released in which Minister Suklabaidya called everyone to join hands together and to conserve biodiversity for our own survival amidst the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The theme of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity “we’re part of the solution” was chosen to be a continuation of the momentum generated last year under the over-arching theme, “Our solutions are in nature”, which served as a reminder that biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges.
