Flood water enters many new areas in Silchar town, level on the rise

May 22: Though the water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat and other places are gradually decreasing, yet flood water has started to enter fresh areas of Silchar town on Sunday, raising the number of affected people. However, on Saturday, as the water level in Barak decreased, the Sluice gates of Manipuri Para and Itkhola were opened. At the initiative of MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, three pump sets were brought. Another pump was managed from a tea garden. Using these pump sets, the accumulated water at Itkhola- Malugram and Ghaniwala was thrown out. Gradually, the water level there started to come down.

Again, although flood water entered areas in Public School Road on Friday. But after rainfall on Saturday night, the water level started to rise considerably in the area. Flood water on Sunday has submerged the entire Public School Main Road. As the drains are overflowing, water has now reached the main road near Lakhsmi Narayan Banquet Hall (erstwhile Gopinath Cinema Hall). The level at this point was also gradually rising.

The premises of Silchar Sashan Ghat was also submerged. Locals informed that water started to enter Sashan Ghat on Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, the entire area of Sashan Ghat was submerged. However, the furnaces there were still outside the reach of flood water. When our correspondent went there, cremations were also taking place in one of the furnace.

Flood water already started to enter areas in Subhas Nagar on Saturday. However, by Sunday afternoon, the level of water there also increased and was advancing gradually. The Subhas Nagar field was full with water. Even the lanes on both sides of the Durga Mandap at Subhas Nagar were full of water.

Another area, where our correspondent visited on Sunday afternoon was that of Chandmari. From near the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tarapur, water could be seen on the street, lanes and also inside Doordarshan Centre. Flood victims from the low-lying areas of Chandmari has taken shelter at Kendriya Vidyalaya. Speaking to way2barak, one of the locals informed that flood water started to enter into this area since Saturday. By Sunday afternoon, the water level has also increased and was gradually submerging the nearby places.

Meanwhile, water still continued to be there at Chandicharan Road. There too, the level of water was rising. The ground floor of almost all the houses were full of water. People of that area complained of severe crisis of drinking water. Electric connection in that area was snapped since last 30 hours. Water in nearby Rangirkhal was also increasing. As the Rangirkhal was almost full with water, there are chances that it may overflow and inundate parts of Shib Colony.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 6 PM on Sunday, was flowing still above the danger level and was recorded at 20.20 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is decreasing at 4 cm per hour at this hour.
