Flood 2.0: Silchar under water; situation quite grim

June 20: From Monday morning, several parts of both urban and rural Silchar were submerged. Due to breach at Bethukandi dyke at Berenga, river water started to enter in various parts of Silchar.

From 3 AM on Monday, water poured in gradually and by 10 AM, the level of water started to increase alarmingly at Kanakpur, Sonai Road, Rangirkhari, Link Road, Ashram Road, Bilpar Public School Road, Shyamananda Ashram Road, Chandicharan Road, Shib Colony, Sashan Road, Deshabandhu Road, Fatak Bazar areas etc.

Almost 70 percent of urban Silchar seemed to be submerged on Monday morning and the situation is quite grim as gradually new areas were submerged.

Surprisingly, in many of these areas, the water was flowing at an alarming speed and people were even finding it very difficult to walk. The entire main road near old Gopinath Cinema Hall, Rangirkhari, Hailakandi Road was submerged. Infact, the dyke at Bethukandi had been damaged and despite of earnest efforts to restore that portion, river water entered the town at a great pace.

Electricity supply in most of the flood affected areas were snapped. Due to rising water level, Transformers at various locations in the town were shut down. As a result, people were facing tremendous difficulties in managing drinking water and also for consumption of daily requirements. Many houses were inundated in several areas of the town. People were finding it very difficult to stay inside their houses.

Considering, the pace of river water, it was advised to vulnerable section of public residing in and around the above mentioned areas to take precautions and shift to a safe place for immediate shelter. Due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak has again started to rise and crossed the danger level at 11 AM on 18 June. The Cumulative Daily Rainfall in Cachar was recorded at 267.5 mm.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 11 AM on Monday, was flowing above the danger level and was recorded at 21.54 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is increasing by 2 cm per hour. As of now, this is the highest water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat this year. The highest flood level at this point was recorded at 21.763 on 11 September, 2007.
