6 new flyovers to be built in the state, but none in Barak Valley

July 10: Chandra Mohan Patowary, Assam Transport Minister during a meeting of the State Road Safety Council on Monday announced that six new flyovers will be constructed in the State. He further stated that out of the six new flyovers, three will be built in Guwahati, whereas the other three will be constructed in Nagaon, Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh districts of Assam. In Guwahati, the flyovers will be built at Lokhra, Garchuk and Basistha Chariali area of the city.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been informed about the project of construction of the flyovers. Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the flyovers will be completed by the ministry by this September.and the construction work of the flyovers is expected to be started from October.

However, this has led to resentment among the people of Barak Valley on the ground that not a single flyover was earmarked for the valley. Traffic problem at Silchar is ever increasing and has become an everyday problem. Last year too, there were talks about a flyover to be built up at Silchar, but since then nothing fruitful has occured. A retired teacher while speaking to way2barak said, “The Chief Minister of the state speaks about the inclusive growth of the state including Barak & Brahmaputra, but when it comes to schemes like flyovers, Barak is deprived.”
