Election Observer at Karimganj who came from Uttar Pradesh tests Covid Positive

April 19: After students, coronavirus has now set its step among the election officials in Barak Valley. Rajiv Kumar, a senior bureaucrat from Uttar Pradesh was deputed as Observer for the Assembly Election 2021 in Karimganj election district. As repoll was ordered by the ECI in a polling booth at Ratabari constituency, so the fresh polls will be held on 20 April. As such, to oversee the process of repoll, the Election Observer reached Karimganj on Saturday. Since then, Rajiv Kumar was suffering from fever. Finally, his Covid test was done today, in which he was detected coronavirus positive.

Informing this, Anbamuthan MP, Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj said that Election Observer Rajiv Kumar after testing positive has been in isolation in his room at Karimganj Circuit House. As a precautionary measure, all officials and staff at Circuit House went for Covid test. All of them were detected as Covid negative. The Deputy Commissioner further informed that the condition of the Election Observer is stable. Rajiv Kumar will return back to Uttar Pradesh once he is tested negative.

It needs mention here that voting in the 2nd phase of election in Assam took place on 1 April. Along with the rest of the constituencies of Barak Valley, election also took place at Indira MV School in Ratabari constituency of Karimganj. However, while the polling team deputed at that polling booth were returning back in the evening at the end of the poll to their respective materials deposit centre, their vehicle suddenly got damaged. They then stopped an ongoing vehicle, which happened to be registered in the name of BJP MLA. This resulted in a great uproar and the Election Commission finally ordered repoll in that centre. Election Observer Rajiv Kumar came to Karimganj on 17 April to oversee the fresh poll on 20 April.
