Barak Valley registers 343 Covid +ve cases on Sunday; 2 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 1,892 in Barak Valley

May 9: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Sunday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less. A total of 343 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Saturday, Barak Valley registered 484 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Sunday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 197 positive cases   (It was 312 on Saturday)
  • Karimganj: 54 positive cases (It was 112 on Saturday)
  • Hailakandi: 92 positive cases (It was 60 on Saturday)
  • A total of 197 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Sunday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 197 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Sunday in Cachar. During the day, 1,477 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done, out of which, a total of 86 persons were found positive, whereas 111 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Dr. Ibrahim Ali Ahmed, District Surveillance Officer (DSO), IDSP, Cachar on Sunday night. With this, the district tally of coronavirus cases in 2021 has gone upto 2,654 . Again, 1,656 patients in this year were cured and discharged. There are 979 active cases in Cachar.

On Sunday, two more persons lost their lives due to Covid-19 at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH on Friday evening. The deceased were identified as:

  • Nitesh Ranjeb Choudhury (79) from North Tripura was admitted at SMCH in the evening on 8 May. He, however, breathed his last at 7.30 AM on 9 May, 2021.
  • Prova Das (60) from Don Bosco Lane, Ramnagar in Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 6 May. She lost her life in the battle against coronavirus at 5.30 PM on 9 May, 2021.

Hailakandi registered 54 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Of the 54 active cases detected on Sunday, 52 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 02 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 356 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 712 RAT tests and 2 RT-PCR tests were done. None were discharged on Sunday. It needs mention here that 60 persons were found positive on Saturday.

Karimganj reported 92 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 5,253. Of the 92 active cases detected on Sunday, 87 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and five under RT-PCR. The district has altogether 557 active COVID-19 cases while five patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Sunday. It needs mention here that on Saturday, 112 positive cases were detected in Karimganj district.

28 jail inmates of District Jail have been infected with COVID-19 on Friday and six earlier, taking the total number of positive cases to 34. The district has altogether 470 active COVID-19 cases while 15 patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Friday. 1,294’swab samples were collected on Saturday. Altogether 2,38,539 samples have been tested so far. The district has currently 13 active containment zones.

On Sunday, out of 36,135 tests, 3,99 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 2,92,368. The positivity rate in the state is 9.13 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,346 positive cases during the day. Further, on Sunday, 48 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 1,676. It needs mention here that on Saturday, 5,756 persons tested positive in Assam and 50 deaths were registered.
