Early detection is key to prevention, says doctors during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Oct. 4: Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October. The Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be celebrated under the theme ‘Give Hope. Save Lives. ‘ Breast cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells, which results in formation of lumps within the breast and it is known to be the most common cancer among women worldwide Breast Cancer  impacts 2.1 million women each year, and also causes the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women.

In 2018, it is estimated that 627,000 women died from breast cancer . In most of the developing regions the incidence rates are below 40 per 100,000. The lowest incidence rates are found in most African countries . It is the most common cancer in women in India and accounts for 14% of all cancers in women. The incidence rates in India begin to rise in the early 30’s and peak at ages 50-64 years.

Women should be aware as to how their breast normally look and feel. If you feel any change, then consult the doctor. It is Advisable for women who are around 40 to get their mammography done. For new mothers, it is advisable to breastfeed their child at least for one year and don’t smoke or drink alcohol in excess. Here are some common myth versus facts related with breast cancer:

Myth: A lump in your breast means you have breast cancer
Fact: Only a small percentage of lumps in the breast are cancerous. But if there is a persistent lump consult a doctor.

Myth: Antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer
Fact: As per NIH, no scientific evidence links the use of these products to the development of breast cancer.

Myth: Breast cancer is contagious
Fact: Breast cancer neither can be caught from someone nor can be transferred to someone.

Myth: A mammogram can cause spread of breast cancer
Fact: A mammogram of the breast helps in its early detection and requires a very small dose of radiation. The risk of harm from this radiation is extremely low.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
