‘Double murder’ of Assam inhabitants in Mizoram, MP Dr Rajdeep Roy demands CBI inquiry in Lok Sabha

Feb. 11: In a tragic note, two brothers working as driver and handyman of an oil tanker died under mysterious circumstances in Mizoram. Both of them are inhabitants of Dholai in Cachar district of Assam. On Friday, during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy raised this pertinent issue on the floor of the House and raised the demand of conducting a CBI inquiry into this incident.

Expressing his views, Dr Roy said, “A few days ago, an oil tanker went to Mizoram from Assam. While returning back to Assam, the driver of the oil tanker, Pravin Singh (45) was brutally assaulted by miscreants. He was murdered by them. The elder brother of the deceased, Nripen Singh (49), who was the handyman of the same oil tanker was apprehended by Mizoram Police on charges of murder of his younger brother Pravin. Nripen Singh was arrested under section 302 of IPC. Police inflicted torture upon him and thereby obtained his signature in a blank paper, wherein it was later written a confession note of committing murder. He was put behind the bars. After a few days, Nripen Singh was transferred to Aizawl jail.”

Dr Roy further said, “After transferring Nripen Singh to Aizawl jail, he was even denied any sort of legal aid to put forth his views.” Saying so, the MP from Silchar informed the House that he had visited the house of the deceased driver Pravin Singh at Dholai on 5 February. He said, “There I saw that the houses of the two brothers Pravin and Nripen were in a common compound. There was even no boundary wall separating the houses of the two brothers. A good relationship prevailed between them and this cannot happen that a brother has killed the other.”

“It is a planned case and surprisingly on 8 February, the brother who was in police custody and later transferred to Aizawl jail (Nripen Singh) has reportedly been informed to have committed suicide over there. This is just unbelievable.” Drawing the attention of the Home Minister Amit Shah through the Speaker Om Birla, Dr Rajdeep Roy said, “Surprisingly, the government administration and civil society exercises almost co-powers and carries on activities in a parallel manner. Sometimes it is felt that the constitution of the country is not at all followed over there in Mizoram. I therefore demand CBI enquiry into the double murder of the brothers. This is a demand of the state to which I belong. I hope that the Home Minister will pay due attention to this demand.”

It needs mention here that the death of the two brothers in Mizoram was heavily resented by the people of Dholai in Cachar district of Assam. Roads were blocked and slogans were raised against Mizoram. On 10 February, State Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika also paid a visit to the house of the deceased and had a conversation with the people of the area.
