DDMA and ASDMA jointly conduct earthquake and fire safety mock drills across 40 schools

way2barak, October 31: — In a remarkable initiative aimed at fostering a culture of safety and preparedness, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, in collaboration with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), successfully organised the “Great Assam School Shakeout Mock Drills” on earthquake and fire safety across 40 schools in Cachar district on Wednesday.
The district-wide exercise, designed to enhance awareness and response capacity among students and school communities, saw the active participation of 27,780 individuals including students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. The simultaneous drills across multiple schools demonstrated Cachar’s growing emphasis on strengthening disaster resilience at the grassroots level.
Under the guidance of DDMA, Cachar, the drills were meticulously executed with support from Fire & Emergency Services, Community Quick Response Teams (CQRT), District Disaster Response Force (DDRF), and Aapda Mitra volunteers. The coordinated efforts created a realistic simulation of emergency situations, offering participants hands-on experience in handling crisis scenarios.
The mock drills featured live demonstrations of “Drop, Cover, and Hold” techniques , crucial during earthquakes as well as emergency evacuation processes and fire safety protocols. Students and staff practiced quick assembly, orderly movement to safe zones, and teamwork-based response measures, reflecting growing community readiness for real-world emergencies.
Officials from UNICEF, along with school administrators and teachers, played an active role in coordinating the event, reaffirming the collective commitment towards disaster risk reduction and community safety. The initiative not only educated young minds but also instilled a sense of responsibility and awareness crucial for reducing casualties during unforeseen calamities.
The “Great Assam School Shakeout Mock Drills” initiative stands as a testament to the Assam Government’s continued dedication towards building a disaster-resilient society. Through sustained awareness drives, hands-on training, and collaborative engagement, Cachar district is steadily moving towards a safer and better-prepared future.
